One of the toughest things for a dog owner to deal with is having a dog that is aggressive. Not only is it trying for the dog owner to deal with an aggressive dog but it can be hazardous as well.
Before you do anything else you should find out what exactly pushes your dogs buttons that makes him act aggressive.
Is your dog exhibiting canine to canine aggression?
If that is the case with your dog one thing you can do to get rid of some of his dog on dog aggression is to make sure you grab your dogs attention when you are approaching another dog.
If you have done any dog training with your dog you might be familiar with the watch me command. Basically what it is, is when you say watch me to your dog they need to be looking you in the eye.
If you can get your dogs attention on you then you have a good chance that they will not get aggressive towards the other dog.
Another thing to avoid when your dog is around another dog is letting your dog make eye contact with the other dog. When dogs make eye contact they are basically issuing a warning that they are more dominating. When both dogs think they are the stronger leader that’s when dog on dog aggression comes out to play.
Another form of dog aggression is food aggressiveness in dogs.
Some dogs will get aggressive when they are eating and get very territorial. If your dog gets aggressive when he eats then you have to be very careful if you have children around.
One of the ways to help get rid of food aggression in dogs is to make sure that they do not get feed until everyone else in the house has finished eating their meals. This will make your dog understand that he is not in charge which is needed if you plan on training your dog to not be aggressive.
Every canine is transcended from wild dogs so the possibility of aggression is always there. Often people believe that all dogs of a certain breed are born aggressive but in reality the ones that get the bad rap for being mean are the ones that people often train that way.
For an example take the pit bull. Pitt Bulls are not overly mean and aggressive by nature. In fact they can be very mild tempered and sweet dogs. However people love to train the pit bull to be a mean aggressive dog.
While you can not classify all dogs from one breed as being aggressive every dog will have its own personality. If you find yourself with an aggressive dog then you need to take precautions for your safety and the safety of any children you have.
So what can you do about having an aggressive dog besides wondering “is my dog aggressive“?
Well besides getting your dog trained, the answer depends on how aggressive your dog is and what sets them off.
One way dogs display aggression is by lying low to the floor like they are going to pounce and growling. It is usually best to just pretend that your dog is not even there when they do this. The worst thing you can do is look them in the eye because by doing that you are issuing a challenge and it will turn into a game of who is in control.
Never lash out or spank your dog if he is doing this or it will turn into a game where he tries to dog you and lunge at you for his turn. Once it becomes a game you will have a very difficult time of breaking your dogs aggressive habit.
If your dog’s aggression is related to food then you might want to consider staying around him when he is eating. Never touch an aggressive dog when he is eating. Start out by just being in the same room as your dog and slowly work your way a little bit closer each meal.
Always use caution when doing this and pay close attention to the signs your dog is giving you. If he starts to get nervous or agitated then do not get any closer.
When you have a very aggressive dog the best thing you can do is to use caution when around your dog and talk to a dog trainer to get the best advice on how to handle your individual situation and to get more information on training aggressive dogs.
