I'm very excited about this! Krista Cantrell is my favorite dog trainer by far! She's just released some great step-by-step videos that show you how to eliminate 95% of all dog behavior issues by working with your dog's natural instincts. I have a few of her books and love the way she teaches. Not to mention that her stuff really works. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

I have a cocker spaniel that is turning two this month, and am needing some advice on training dogs. I’ve taught her the basic commands: sit, lay down, shake, roll over, come, stay, etc. The only problem is that as soon as a distraction enters the picture, the obedience goes out the window. For example, if it is just the two of us & I say, "Lucy sit." She sits immediately. Now add a couple of kids & maybe a squirrel out in the yard into the situation, and she’s all over the place. How do you teach your dog to focus?

Professional training for both of you.

Well I’ve been putting up with my 2 year old male yorkie, and I do NOT know how I’ve been putting up with him for so long, about a year and a half.
I’ve gotten him neutered recently, even though we wanted to breed, because my vet said his behaviour WOULD change dramatically if we did so, but it didn’t change a thing. I guess he just wanted our money -_-
Anyways, I swear my dog is the devil in disguise. He barks whenever he hears the doorbell,
gets ferocious when we get near his food, bites our hands when were trying to play with him, pulls on the leash, and goes potty inside when were not home. He also tries to escape the house often by trying to get out the door whenever we open it and he attacks our guests. He also barks at everyone and everything when we’re on walks.
When he knows he’s in trouble, like when we get mad at him for potty-ing inside, he gets extremely ferocious, like he is trying to defend himself.
One of my friends told me he’s so stubborn like that because Yorkshire Terriers are not pack dogs, or something, so they are not used to having leaders.
I’ve been living at a house in the past when we first got him so he didnt bother anyone else that much, but now we have moved into an apartment , and I swear my neighbours hate us.
I was thinking of giving him away, because I cannot keep up with this anymore. I DO try to train him the best I can, but it seems like everything i teach him just goes in one ear and out the other.

Its summer now, so I wont be busy with school, so I’ll have more time to train him and spend more time with him. I’ve been thinking of participating in obedience classes , and hopefully, by september he’ll be more obedient and a better dog overall.

I’m only 14, but he is MY dog, as I did ask my mom to get him for me, so I’m determined to correct his bad behaviour , as he is my responsibility.

My question is what is the best obedience classes? Like, should I go to BarkBusters or a similar in-home companies? Or should I send him to places like Pet Smart? Please tell me what you think, and some suggestions (please specify company names AND PRICE etc.) would be nice!!
We live in Toronto , Ontario.

PLEASE! I love my dog and I really do not want to give him away!!

Typically, I’d say you training your dog yourself is best, but obviously that’s not an option at this stage. What you need to find is somebody who will take your dog AND YOU, at the SAME TIME, and work with you both. Your dog sounds like he’s got some pretty well developed dominance issues. You need as much work as he does.

In the mean time, remember: if your dog tells you to back off, and you do, then he is quite literally telling you what to do, and you are quite literally following his orders. That’s no good. Whomever you find, their program needs to involve working with the both of you at once.

So we’ve been giving our dogs some obedience training for a few months now, and we have seen some new pups we’re interested in adopting, But we’re worried if it cock up everything we’ve worked for. What’s the likelihood of that happening?

There is a good chance of a new puppy setting your dogs back, yes.
The puppy will have accidents and if they are not cleaned up properly, the scent could encourage your dogs to start peeing in the house.
Also, puppies misbehave, if your dogs see the puppy getting away with normal puppy behavior, they may start to think it’s ok for them to do these things too.

If you do decide to get a puppy, make sure you don’t get all caught up in the puppy and ignore what your older dogs are doing. Continue to practice your obedience with the dogs daily, this will keep it fresh in their minds, when the puppy is ready, include him in the sessions. Training never ends, you need to continue training dogs all throughout their lives to keep them sharp.
You will likely be giving a great deal less attention to your older dogs if you get a puppy. Puppies are a lot of work and require a ton of attention. You may feel bad for your current dogs, but don’t. Don’t let them get away with things you normally wouldn’t just because you feel guilty etc.
Also, make sure your older dogs get the same amount of exercise and mental stimulation as they got before you got the puppy.

You will find a similarities between many proud dog owners, which is the fact that they’ve managed to successfully behavior trained their dogs! Many first time puppies owner will quickly realized that it seems impossible to get your puppies to do what you want them to do, it is as if they have a mind of it’s own and their ultimate goal is to annoy you.

While training your dog’s behavior is a long and complicated process, it should not be more difficult than that! Understanding some of the training principal listed below can save you a lot of time as well as frustration, so if you’re looking to train your dog, read on!

Fair Rewarding System

Much like dishing out appropriate punishment when they misbehave, you should also include a rewarding system for your pet every time they do an action that is desirable. Much like humans, your pet need affirmation and approval from you, by rewarding them you’re essentially telling them that you like what they’ve just did, this positive reinforcement will work better especially when you’re trying to get your dog to learn a new trick, as punishment is a little too vague for your dog to understand if they do not perform the action that you want them to do.

Learning One Step at a Time

Of course you are excited to begin your training journey with your dog, and so is your dog! But bear in mind that dogs are simple animal and can only retain so many things at one sitting, therefore you should teach them one trick at a time, as overwhelming them with tons of different tricks will usually do them no good. The best way to go about this is to be patient with them, you might need up to two weeks for them to fully understand your command, but it is far better than teaching them new things every other day, as it will just confuses them as to what they should really be doing.

Are You Frustrated?

Sometimes pet owners lose their patience and temper and will no doubt lash out on their dog. Whenever you find yourself facing this situation, you have to stop and think, why in the first place are you doing this? Were you trying to share a special bond and moment with your pet, and in the mean time have fun? If that was true, you are not getting anywhere near there! So if you start seeing the dog training process as a chore rather than fun, then you need to start evaluating where it is heading and stop if you have to!

-Need to stop your dog from trying to fight with other dogs?
-Want to know how to curb your dog’s aggressiveness?
-Sick of having your dog race out the front door?
-Hate having your dog jump up on you?
-Neighbors getting annoyed with your pet’s constant barking?

Do you want your dog to be well behaved around people and other dogs?
AND have them obey all of your house rules… even when you’re not around ?

Remember, dogs know ONLY “dog language”. When they come to live with us, we must teach them our language.

Your dog is always learning. The problem is – how do you get your dog to learn good habits and NOT bad habits?

Dogs understand things very differently to us humans, so frequently when you are training (or even when you think you are NOT training) your dog you are actually making behavior problems worse!

When you see the world through your dog’s eyes you gain a huge advantage in training them to do what you want.

When you understand how your dog thinks – and what he needs to know – the training program is easy to follow.

Most dog obedience training courses rely on punishing your dog whenever he doesn’t listen…

They never reveal proven strategies that show exactly how to make your dog UNDERSTAND what you are communicating to him…

They don’t discuss the most vital part of getting your dog to learn new things! (Which is making sure he understands what you are trying to get him to do!)

You don’t need some 12–week dog obedience training plan where you do almost the same thing each week. This is not the most effective way of training your dog because your dog switches out of learning mode due to him not being used to learning new things!…

You don’t need some “scientifically calculated” dog training program based on hours of repetition that’s impossible to follow (not to mention doesn’t work).

What you need is the fastest and healthiest methods that exist to stop your dog’s behavior problems now!

Whether your dog is a puppy or an adult, it doesn’t matter, you can transform your dog’s behavior. Forget hiring a professional dog trainer and save hundreds of dollars.

Will you be next to change YOUR dog’s behavior?
